New Zealand’s wildlife is unlike anywhere else in the world. Our native birds, frogs, lizards, and plants evolved over millions of years without the threat of land based predators, until humans introduced them. Today, our unique species are in crisis, with 25 million native birds killed every year by invasive predators such as rats, stoats, and possums.
To combat this, New Zealand has set an ambitious goal: Predator Free 2050. This nationwide initiative aims to eradicate these destructive predators, ensuring our native species can thrive once again.
New Zealand has one of the highest proportions of threatened species in the world, with around 4,000 native species at risk of extinction. Without action, we could lose treasured wildlife like the kiwi, kākā, and tuatara forever.
Predator Free 2050 is a long term, collaborative effort involving government agencies, iwi and hapū, businesses, community groups, and individuals. Together, we’re working towards a future where New Zealand’s wildlife is no longer under threat.
The Predator Free 2050 programme focuses on several key areas:
✅ Developing New Technologies
Cutting edge tools and methods are being researched to improve trapping and eradication efforts.
✅ Protecting Endangered Species
Millions of hectares of land are being managed to create safe habitats for native wildlife.
✅ Community Involvement
From backyard trapping to large-scale pest control, Kiwis across the country are making a difference.
Everyone has a role to play in achieving this goal. Here’s how you can contribute:
🐀 Set Up a Backyard Trap | Controlling rats and stoats in your local area makes a real impact.
🌿 Support Local Predator Control Initiatives | Join a community trapping group or donate to eradication projects.
🌳 Plant Native Trees | Restoring native bush provides food and shelter for birds and other wildlife.
At Southern Pest Control, we’re proud to support Predator Free 2050. With expert knowledge in pest management, we provide solutions for landowners and communities to take action against invasive predators. Whether you need advice on trapping or help with large scale eradication, we’re here to help.
